Weekly Update March 28

Have you lost your WHY?

Hey ,

Happy Monday! I hope you have a great start to the week coming up. Over the past month, I've had a lot of conversations with founders who feel like their companies aren't making them happy. The reason is often that the business has deviated from WHY the founder became an entrepreneur in the first place. Let's dive into this topic, and learn how to realign your WHY with your business.

Finding Your WHY

I want you to take a moment and reflect on why you decided to start your own business in the first place.

  • Did you want to be your own boss?

  • Were you tired of climbing the corporate ladder?

  • Did you have an incredible recipe that you want to get out into the world?

  • Did you want more flexibility over your schedule?

  • Did you have an idea and want to turn that into reality?

  • Did you come from a family of entrepreneurs?

  • Did you see this as a way to make a lot of money?

  • Did you want to create a legacy to pass down to your children?

What's your WHY? Be honest.

These usually break down into a few core values:

  • Self Determination

  • Financial independence

  • Innovation

  • Problem Solving

Your WHY is your North Star.So where's the disconnect?First, starting a business is WAY harder than anyone imagines. It requires:

  • Long hours

  • Lots of money

  • Overcoming obstacles every day

  • A long time to reach profitability

  • Luck and good timing

There is likely a large disconnect between what you imagined it would take to be successful, and the reality of getting there.

  • Have you taken on a new retail partner because you needed the perceived growth?

  • Have you sold equity because you were running out of cash?

  • Did you bring on a co-founder just because you needed free labor?

  • Did you hire a consultant/agency because you desperately hoped they would turn around your business?

All of these are signs that your business has deviated from your WHY.

Realign Your WHYI started Foodbevy because 1) I am a full-time work-from-home dad and need the flexibility to spend with my kid.2) I love solving problems and helping other founders be successful. That's my WHY. As I've built Foodbevy, I use those two principles as my north star and make decisions in alignment. But believe me, every day I have opportunities that sound great, but conflict with my WHY. It's very hard, but I'm constantly turning down partnerships, sponsorships, and projects because they don't align. As you build your company, you’ll constantly have outside forces distracting you from living your WHY. Always keep your WHY at the front of your mind and use it to make decisions on how you will run and grow your business.

Are you working in alignment with your WHY or not? Shoot me an e-mail and let me know.

Every seasoned CPG founder knows – you build your brand selling D2C, but you build your business selling wholesale. Once you find your product-market fit, focusing on expanding your wholesale business can give you considerable upward momentum.

Streamlined eliminates the back-office work that goes with scaling a wholesale operation. It makes invoicing simpler and ‘streamlined’.
